The first step is to introduce yourself. Tell people who knows you from where you grew up, where you have been, what you are doing now, how long you have been practicing, what your preferred style of martial arts is, what your preferred weapons are, and where you plan on taking your martial arts career.
It is important to maintain a polite, friendly attitude during your first meeting with an instructor or individual that you are about to join as a student in a martial arts class.
Don’t be afraid to politely express that there is no room for attitude or bad attitude, you will be with them every day so he or she may also expect a pleasant and polite demeanor. Then, you will be able to guage if the person who you are going to be training with is worth your time and energy.
2. Introduction to Zanshin (Attention and Focus)
The world today is incredibly overwhelming. There are not enough hours in the day to get our “to-dos” completed, much less enjoy the time we have with our family and friends.
To keep everyone happy, we often multitask and perform tedious tasks that we dislike when under pressure.
As a result of these problems, we often get pulled in different directions and find it challenging to stay focused at a fixed point.
The Japanese samurai of yore just did not experience the same problems. That does not mean they lacked focus and attention.
While they may have experienced doubt when pursuing their goals, they never considered failing because of them.
Think of Chris Budd, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tiger Woods, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and so on.
They were all exceptional at forming a focused vision for whatever they were pursuing and then applying themselves enthusiastically and diligently toward that goal.
Mozart is a perfect example of a person who seemingly did not have success at first, but whose talent became evident in his near-misses.
Court Jesters were not as talented as other performers they were hired to yoke and lead, but when one was given a solo performance they became incredibly talented at it and performed like they had been expertly choreographed by a pro.
Similar to the Court Jester, try doing things you might not think you have any talent for now.

Zanshin is about your individual focus and ability to be aware of what is happening in the world around you. It is the ability to stay aware of the details, people, and surroundings. Zanshin is an ancient Japanese philosophy dedicated to training that works with every part of your being. Zanshin is not a discipline of academics or a discipline that you can work on for a certain amount of hours each day. There is no Zanshin workbook.
It cultivates a constant alertness, an awareness, a constant zooming in-and-out of one’s abilities. Zanshin is not fancy or esoteric. It is not something for intellectuals that haven’t done their research. Zanshin is a discipline of daily practice. It has been performed for centuries by religious Zen masters. Zanshin is a basic principle of martial arts.
What does all this mean?
Make an effort everyday to examine, understand, and implement each day.
4. Another Important Category of Zanshin: Children!
With zanshin, a student will keep his eyes trained on what he’s learning.
If a breather is needed to allow his brain to “cool off” — that’s okay! Taking care of the demands of training and other activities in each moment will keep the brain heated as it tap dances to the beat of learning, and the process can dull throb the mind.
Use zanshin as a clever approach to alleviate all the pressure you feel from your lifestyle and formulate your educational goals.
But how do you go about zanshin?
Regular living artists fall short because they don’t have the time or focus to keep their focus. Zanshin alleviates this problem by combining two items the Japanese consider a necessity to the true artist:
• Gut and potato
• The focus
When a child master zanshin he will experience a more important level of focus and attention. Zanshin user’s behavior is admirable before the world, including the child is watching him.

Zanshin is a critical quality that the martial artist must have.
It is purported to be one of the seven basic qualities called chidô (超達) or “super human” or “superior.”
The martial soundness requires one not get caught in a moment of hesitation. This quality is not seen in common sports men; instead it is a virtue that is exclusive to the martial arts.
Zanshin was first developed by ura nage (裏鈍之), the famed fencing master Yoshimasa Nagaishi (長谿欽謀). Although being developed for the sword, what is specifically mentioned on top under zanshin in the text is not swordplay. It is rather discussion on the land elements.

Sixth-century farmer Munehisa Hiraoka had two very good things going for himself: his crop was good and his luck was good. This turned out to be Munehisa’s undoing. Unfortunately, in the autumn of 720, he was ill and decided to wet the bag of seeds he was going to plant in the morning in order to keep it fresh for recreation later. Before going to bed that night, he took a stick and began stacking it in a pile, riding the waves of sleep until he eventually fell into slumber.
In the morning of the next day, Munehisa felt shaky, his joints sore and aches upon rising. Desperately he stumbled into the house in search of his wife in order to tell her of his foolishness and sympathize. Curious,
she ran to discover what was wrong with her husband and found him ill and slouched and lethargic in the house, his eyes twitching, his long hair and beard long matted from sleep. Concerned at a loss for any words to comfort him, she remained next to his pallet until morning, when he awoke and felt he could eat something.
In the morning, thirsty and hungry, Munehisa awaited his breakfast, which consisted of big purple wild mushrooms gathered in the forest and fried rice covered in sticky sauces.
